POSITION TITLE: Technical Library Assistant

REPORTING RELATIONSHIP: Reports to the Collection Development and Technology Manager.

PURPOSE: To provide Norfolk County Public Library staff and patrons with high quality library services in accordance with the policies and directions of the Board.

a) Formal Education —- Post Secondary Studies in information or library studies or a related field or a Library Techniques diploma from a recognized and accredited institution. Excel Certificate recognized to some degree. Computer hardware and software educational background and experience an asset.

b) Experience —- Minimum of three years experience with working knowledge of the functions of libraries, library services, technical services, computer services, library practices, and library procedures.

c) Skills —- Excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to communicate effectively, maintaining an effective working relationship with library users and staff. Typing requirement of 80 wpm. Ability to work independently and effectively as a member of the team. Expertise with computers, computer software, in particular the current integrated library system software, Dewey decimal classification tables, and Sears subject headings are required. Expertise with current technology is necessary.

SCOPE: Assisting with all aspects of the day-to-day functions of technical services, including the operations of the integrated library services system, interlibrary loan services, website, social media, wireless operations of mobile devices, downloading from the Internet in all forms to all devices.

WORKING RELATIONSHIPS: Reports to the Collection Development and Technology Manager. Works to implement technical service policies and procedures. Works with the Collection Development and Technology Manager to resolve computer hardware and software issues.

WORKING CONDITIONS: Occasionally works in full public view with interruptions. Often works at a computer screen. Work is subject to deadlines. Have regularly scheduled hours at the Norfolk County Public Library. Schedule and locations subject to change.

IMPACT OF ERROR: Failure to perform duties as required could lessen library service and cause frustration to staff, confused services, and unfavourable public relations. Unresolved computer and technical services issues reduce quality of library services.

CONTROL: The Technical Library Assistant functions under the Collection Development and Technology Manager in keeping with the policies and procedures of the library system and with respect to the guidelines and standards as set by the Library Board.

RESPONSIBILITIES: At the discretion of the Collection Development and Technology Manager, the Technical Library Assistant will perform any or all of the following duties in varying degrees:

– Catalogues and processes library materials.
– Resolves computer software and hardware issues.
– Receives and reconciles invoices and credit notices in database.
– Updates and maintains the integrated library system database.
– Assists with the discarding and weeding process of library materials.
– Configures integrated library system software to conform to library policies such as hour’s open and statutory holidays.
– Changes messages on slip printers.
– Assist with providing statistics.
– Assist with circulation duties when required.
– Complete tasks to maintain Interlibrary Loan Services.
– Communicates with library staff on behalf of the Collection Development and Technology Manager.
– Assist staff members and library patrons with the library’s online resources.
– Recommends procedures and policies for the efficient operation of cataloguing, processing, acquisitions, and weeding.
– Assist with the website.
– Assist with social media.
– Assist with the wireless network.
– Assist with training and workshops for both staff and patrons.
– Coach and instruct staff as required.
– Assist with special events.
– Accepts directives from the Facilities and Operations Manager and from the Programming and Communications Manager.
– Other work assigned by the Collection Development and Technology Manager.
– Valid drivers’ license and transportation required.
