POSITION TITLE: Technical & Social Media Library Assistant

REPORTING RELATIONSHIP: Collection Development and Technology Manager

PURPOSE: To provide Norfolk County Public Library staff and patrons with high quality technical and library services in accordance with the policies and directions of the Board.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:
a) Formal Education —- Post-Secondary Degrees/Diplomas in technology studies or computer science or equivalent. Social media marketing educational background and computer expertise in NCPL standard specific software from a recognized and accredited institution. Library Techniques Diploma, Excel and Marketing (social media) and/or Computer Certificates recognized to some degree.
b) Experience —- Minimum of two years’ experience with working knowledge of technical and computer services, marketing (social media), library practices, and library procedures.
c) Skills —- Expertise with computers, computer software, current innovative developments, and marketing (social media) is necessary. Ability to teach digital literacy classes to all ages. Excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to communicate effectively, maintaining an effective working relationship with library users and staff. Ability to work independently and effectively as a member of the team. Must be aware of safe work practices as they relate to job responsibilities and work environment, and have the basic understanding of the Occupational Health & Safety Act.

SCOPE: Assisting with all aspects of the day-to-day functions of technical services, including MakerSpace operations of the integrated library services system, website, social media, wireless operations of mobile devices, downloading from the Internet in all forms to all devices.

WORKING RELATIONSHIPS: Reports to the Collection Development and Technology Manager. Works to implement technical service policies and procedures. Works with the Technology Manager to resolve computer hardware and software issues. Assists the Management Team to promote services, programs and events offered at the NCPL.

WORKING CONDITIONS: Occasionally works in full public view with interruptions. Often works at a computer screen. Work is subject to deadlines. Have regularly scheduled hours at the Norfolk County Public Library. Schedule and locations subject to change.

IMPACT OF ERROR: Failure to perform duties as required could lessen library service and cause frustration to staff, confused services, and unfavourable public relations. Unresolved computer and technical services issues reduce quality of library services.Failure to maintain current social media status could reduce service levels and interests.

CONTROL: The Technical &Social Media Library Assistant functions under the Collection Development and Technology Manager in keeping with the policies and procedures of the library system and with respect to the guidelines and standards as set by the Library Board.

RESPONSIBILITIES: At the discretion of the Collection Development Manager the Technical & Social Media Library Assistant will perform any or all of the following duties in varying degrees:

– Liaise with Norfolk County IS Division on public access technology, equipment software and upgrades
– Maintains MakerSpace equipment and researches trends for future development
– Plans and delivers technology training and workshops for both staff and patrons
– Resolves computer software and hardware issues.
– Updates and maintains the integrated library system database.
– Promote effective and appropriate use of information technology.
– Configures integrated library system software to conform to library policies such as hour’s open and statutory holidays.
– Changes messages on slip printers.
– Assist with providing statistics.
– Complete tasks to maintain Interlibrary Loan Services.
– Communicates with library staff on behalf of the Collection Development and Technology Manager.
– Assist staff members and library patrons with the library’s online resources.
– Assist with the website.
– Assist with and maintain current social media tools and recommends future applications.
– Assists with the promotion and advertising of events, programs and special services
– Assist with the wireless network.
– Assist with training and workshops for both staff and patrons.
– Coaches and instruct staff as required.
– Assist with special events.
– Accepts directives from the Management Team
– Perform other duties as assigned.
– Valid drivers’ license and reliable transportation required.
