Position: PPT Library Assistant

Status: 15 hours per week

Salary: $25.580 – $31.975 per hour

 Scope of Position:

To provide users of the NCPL system with high quality library services in accordance with the policies and directions of the Board.

Position Description:
At the discretion of the Facilities and Operations Manager the Library Assistant will perform any or all of the following duties in varying degrees:

  • Performs the full range of circulation procedures using an automated circulation system, including checking library materials in and out
  • Performs opening and closing procedures depending on hours scheduled, including arming and disarming the alarm system
  • Staff must stay current with new policies, practices and changes in library procedures that are made available
  • Explains library policies and procedures to patrons/public and enforces them when necessary
  • Handles complaints and answers a variety of questions at the circulation desk
  • Responsible for receiving and reconciling cash received, depositing and safekeeping of all money
  • Answers telephones and provides routine information or refers and transfers calls
  • Receives new materials and process for patron use as required
  • Requests and maintains stock supplies
  • Inspects library materials, makes minor repairs, create new labels and recovers library materials as required
  • Notifies patrons of overdue materials and encourage their return and/or replacement
  • Reserves library materials as required and deals with interlibrary loan requests
  • Performs related work as assigned by the Facilities Manager and or the Management Team
  • Performs general reference and research assistance to patrons
  • Performs public service duties as scheduled and required
  • Assists patrons with automated databases and the use of the public access computers
  • Participates in preparation of materials to promote use of the library
  • Provides reader’s advisory, suggest suitable reading materials, and keep patrons up-to-date on new library materials
  • Performs room reservations task for the public requiring meeting room facilities
  • Maintains non-book collections
  • Assists with library programs and events
  • Prepares library materials for outreach to those unable to reach the library
  • Assists with weeding procedures
  • Performs routine duties like empty drop box, turn on computers and printers, send faxes and collect fees, do photocopying for patrons and collect fees, accept requests for ILLO’s, issue dog tags, sell and collect fees for old discarded library materials. Suggest suitable reading materials for patrons, and keep patrons up-to-date on new books.  Updates bulletin boards. Assures accurate library shelving of books and periodicals by shelf reading and re-shelving, as necessary
  • Assist users in using equipment such as the CAP terminals, copy machines, self-checkout unit, PC Reservation, online catalogue, microform readers, wireless access, and other equipment’s as required.
  • Valid driver’s license required and access to a reliable vehicle
  • Knowledge & Skill: Formal Education –Must have completed the following : Post-Secondary Graduation Diploma and/or Degree, successful completion of a Library Techniques Diploma, and/or successful completion of SOLS EXCEL program
  • Minimum of three years’ experience with current knowledge of automated circulation system and proficiency in the use of computers. Working knowledge of functions of libraries, library services, practices and procedures
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills and interpersonal skills are required
  • Ability to work independently and effectively as a member of the team
  • Familiarity with general office equipment
  • Must be aware of safe work practices as they relate to job responsibilities and work environment, and have the basic understanding of the Occupational Health & Safety Act
